The Band: Having garnered a steadily increasing fan base over a number of years and establishing themselves as one of Scotland’s biggest guitar based bands with their most recent LP, Twin Atlantic have propelled themselves further than many would have imagined upon their emergence in early 2007. Plying their craft in front of 1000s at an extensive array of festivals in the summer of 2014 and undertaking a well received tour in the winter months, the Glasgow-based four piece have made strides toward the upper echelon of the British music industry due to their newfound stadium rock sensibilities; whilst interweaving elements of the trademark sound that gained them a groundswell of support in their formative years.
The Sound: The track in question is ‘Oceans’, a composition that is in line with a penchant for self-analytical balladry that has been a staple of their songwriting endeavours since 2008’s A Guidance From Colour. Featuring driven and emotive vocals from frontman Sam Mctrusty, it deals with themes of hopelessness and despair in relation to loss. The utilisation of sparse organ chords and rousing acoustic guitar lends itself to an anthemic overtone whilst guitarist Barry McKenna’s cello in the lead up to its crescendo provides a sense of grandeur to the proceedings.
The video: Filmed by Edinburgh’s Something Something duo, the video features the band in an acting role at sea and even some epic underwater scenes, fitting for the track title.
The lowdown: ‘Oceans’ is available now on Itunes via Red Bull Records. Those who weren’t able to catch Twin Atlantic live during 2014 can do so during their brief UK tour on the following dates:
