THE Association for Electronic Music (AFEM) estimates that £100 million worth of royalties are due to be paid to the songwriters and artists behind music played in nightclubs.

The electronic music scene is said to be one of the fast-growing genres in the music industry worth nearly £5 billion and the trade body said clubs do not accurately collate information on what songs are played resulting royalties paid to the wrong musicians.

As one can imagine, monitoring nightclubs has proved difficult, thus driving the AFEM to endorse a piece of electronic kit that sits in the mixing desk and tags tracks played in the venue. However, this device is not in place across the board.

Musicians are paid via collection societies such as PRS for Music and PPL who take money from businesses such as pubs, hairdressers and officers and pay more than £15 million to artists and composers in the electronic music scene.
