MORE than 53% of all albums sold in the UK last year were by British artists – the highest level since Britpop’s heyday in 1997.
Noel Gallagher has proven to bridge both eras with his recent record Chasing Yesterday currently sitting at the number 1 spot.
In 1997 album sales were at 109.3 million. Last year this number fell, but arguably still a healthy number at 86.8 million sales.
The biggest selling album in 1997 was Spice Girls’ record Spice. U2, Blur, Oasis, The Prodigy and Wu-Tang Clan were also among the acts to sell the most records during this record year for music.
