seemed that no matter what they did or what direction they headed off in, Bloc Party’s return was always going to be scrutinised by their extremely passionate fanbase. Having previously divided opinion with bold moves such as the shift towards electronica on 2008’s Intimacy and re-entering that domain with this year’s ‘The Love Within’, the band have taken another unheralded step with ‘The Good News’, the second single to be released from their forthcoming LP Hymns.

Setting out with a despondent and wallowing alt-rock indebted guitar part, ‘The Good News’ soon lurches into life with Kele Okerere’s ever powerful vocals and emotive swells of piano. As things begin to settle and the listener begins to get acclimatised to this brazen sonic leap, the band devilishly throw another curveball with its hulking chorus which features a riff that could’ve been plucked from Seasick Steve’s stripped back and bluesy catalogue.

Bloc Party’s fifth studio album Hymns is slated for release on the 29th January 2016, while those looking to catch them live can do so on the NME Awards tour which features a date at Glasgow’s legendary Barrowlands.
