image001The band: A few notable bands of the day, such as Temples and The Strypes, are reaching back into the past, grabbing hold of a musical style and breathing fresh life into it. Climbing Boys are doing the same, openly wearing the label of post-punk on their collective sleeves. The four piece band from London are set to release their debut single ‘Conjoining Rite’, which as befitting its darkness, emerged from a windowless basement where the group used to rehearse.

The sound: ‘Conjoining Rite’ (listen below) is a short and stripped back track that contains bass-heavy verses and some dour vocals, before breaking into a psychedelic tinged chorus with a lovely sounding guitar hook. Despite its moody feel it’s actually an addictive song and inspires a kind of repressed energy that would work well in a live setting. Guitarist and singer Tom Salo said of the track “It’s a song about human weakness, phrenology and sex magick”.

The lowdown: The single comes out on the 26th May on Birthday Records. After that the band are on tour with Howling Bells, starting on the 29th May and finishing on the 10th June, along the way stopping off at King Tuts, Glasgow, on the 5th June.
