AN
inventive songstress that’s been hellbent on re-sculpting soul music in her own image since the release of her idiosyncratic and often mesmerising debut LP Sing To The Moon, Laura Mvula is back and she seems more intent on taking the genre and its time honoured tropes into uncharted territory than ever before.

Teaming up with the iconic Nile Rodgers for the first single from her hotly anticipated sophomore record, Mvula has thankfully re-entered the fray with something special on ‘Overcome.’

Contrasting an ambient aesthetic with the urgency and dramatic flair of disco, ‘Overcome’ sees Rodgers employing the kind of riveting, funk based riff that has led  thousands of timeless artists to enlist his services and providing a beautiful foundation over which the Birmingham based artist Mvula delivers a wonderfully naunced vocal performance.

An entrancing affair which sees Mvula dabble with a sound that is notably removed from much of her debut album, it’ll be intriguing to see just how far she’ll progress on her new record and whether she’ll set a standard of excellence which all aspiring neo-soul artists must aim for. Based on the strength of this first offering, it’s in no way far-fetched to believe that she may do just that.

‘Overcome’ is available now via Itunes.
