The band: On the cusp of releasing his debut album is Tobias Jesso Jr, a journeyman musician who has recently settled in to the role of singer-songwriter. After trying and failing to make it as a pop song ghostwriter, he went back to the drawing board and has found his calling in the form of piano-led ballads.
The sound: ‘Without You’ is the third single to be released from the upcoming album Goon. It drifts around minor chords, and his soft, musing vocals feel intimately introspective. The softness of his voice shares similarities with Slowdive’s track ‘Alison’, but ‘Without You’ is far more exposed. It is all backed up by Danielle Haim’s minimal percussion, helping things along with all the simplicity that the piece requires.
The lowdown: Goon will be out on the 17th March on True Panther. The Canadian will be hitting the UK in May for a bunch of shows, including Stag and Dagger ‘Live At Glasgow’ Festival on the 3rd May.
