ROUTINELY
decimating the arbitrary boundaries of genre and convention in order to make some of the most deeply rewarding and immersive music of the past 20 years, Young Fathers celebrated the completion of their new album with the emergence of ‘Lord’ and the announcement of a new tour last month.

Maintaining the euphoric use of  gospel choirs and religious iconography that was the focal point of their stunning contribution to the  T2: Trainspotting soundtrack ‘Only God Knows’, the first track from their as yet undetailed new record is an exercise in ornate beauty teamed with a lingering sense of menace and uncertain bleakness. Deriving tranquility from a place of melancholia in a manner that recalls frequent touring companions Massive Attack or the work of Richard D James at his most forthright and poignant, the band continue to veer off in a direction that is at once timeless and contains a level of ingenuity that almost seems unattainable by any of their contemporaries.

The track has now been accompanied by an equally compelling video by Rianne White. Featuring intense closeups of the trio in the rain and on horseback, the brooding, visually striking clip works perfectly alongside the powerfully evocative music.

Alongside the revelation that their album is complete, the Edinburgh-based trio have also revealed details of a new UK tour which will feature a date at Glasgow’s Barrowlands.
