MEET Conscious Pilot. Rising from the ashes of multiple outfits from in and around the Scottish music scene, such as Cheap Teeth, Pressure Retreat and Catholic Action, the five-piece have brought their collective experience together under an enthralling new guise – today unveiling their debut single ‘Halfway to Hockney’.

The single arrives after a suitably impresseive debut Glasgow headline show at Nice n Sleazy last night – and it has made for a striking introduction.

Founded by Jay Laycock and Jack Sharp as a successor to Cheap Teeth, ‘Halfway to Hockney’ is a vital slice of post-punk that doesn’t stray too far from where their former outfit left off. The storytelling flair is very much still present and correct, with vivid lyrics set against a shape-shifting punk instrumental – Laycock’s theatrical vocal leading the listener into increasingly choppy territory and a looming feeling of unease.

Recorded by Matt Peel at the Nave in Leeds, it’s said to be centred around an individual’s thirst for meaning, depicting a protagonist as they fall perilously from the tree of self-identity, grasping at every characteristic branch on the way down, desperate to not be swept away by their impending crisis.

A compelling listen, check it out below.
