happynessThe band: London trio Happyness released their debut album Weird Little Birthday last summer, and since the band have gradually been building up momentum. Their American college rock sound, and clever, wit-injected lyrics have certainly caught the eye of many fans and critics alike, and they are preparing for a busy 2015.

The sound: Weird Little Birthday is awash with various different styles – lo-fi, garage, DIY, punk, college rock, to name a few. The album whispered misery and then laughed at itself for being so ridiculous. It’s a musical black comedy. New song ‘A Whole New Shape’ yet again puts you in the mind of someone on the verge of giving up, and laughing all the more manically for it. It’s full of hammered out chords on the guitar underpinned by a simple bass riff, and then fronted by the almost whiney vocals.

The lowdown: A deluxe edition of their debut album will be coming out on the 30th March on new label Moshi Moshi, and will feature ‘A Whole New Shape’. They are off to the US for a tour in March that will include a trip to the esteemed SXSW Festival. Then this summer expect to see them at numerous festivals around the UK including The Great Escape and End of the Road.
