ARRIVING armed with a completely infectious and authentic brand of garage rock, Shredd are one of the latest additions to Glasgow’s popular DIY label Fuzzkill Records. The brainchild of Deathcats drummer Chris Harvie, the three-piece outfit have unveiled their thrilling debut EP by the name of Every Time We Meet I Want To Die and it’s an eruption of huge riffs, poppy hooks and fuzz-laden carnage.
Laying down three new cuts for the EP, the band have been able to retain the raucous energy of their live shows from start to finish with the opening track ‘Hideout’ providing an immediate blast of infectious pop to get things underway. Exhibiting all the qualities that have made them such an exciting prospect, it is a song that exudes all kinds of chaos while simultaneously displaying an innate skill for tight, catchy melodies. With the washed out dissonant lead vocals pairing well with delicate yet infectious background harmonies, the track propels forwards before culminating in unbridled carnage; percussion and guitars let off the leash in dramatic fashion.
‘I’ll Leave It’ channels the fizzing energy of the previous track in a darker and more methodical way. With steady rhythms and imposing basslines employed on the verses, they instill a certain swagger; expertly building up to another fuzzy rampage as it draws to a close.
Opening with sweet harmonies over jangly guitars, ‘The Switch’ begins in a surprisingly low key fashion; purposefully luring you into a false sense of security before launching into a heavy onslaught of riffage. Harbouring a nihilistic edge, it is by far the heaviest track on the EP; allowing the band to unleash over a typically raucous chorus. Featuring searing guitar lines, echoing vocals and a rip-roaring instrumental section, it explodes with an industrial abrasiveness and deep-rooted frustration.
With the lo-fi aesthetic and fuzz-laden sound of their influences, Shredd come armed with a refreshing sense of authenticity that is hard to ignore. Chaotic, infectious and fast as hell, Every Time We Meet I Want To Die is a brilliantly executed slice of garage rock that has you hooked from the outset.
